The family of a young pilot who tragically died weeks before his 21st birthday have remembered him as a “caring, kind-hearted” person who had his life cruelly cut short.

Jack Miller’s dream of becoming a pilot finally came true when he received his licence this year.

But on Tuesday, that dream came to a heartbreaking halt when Jack lost control of his Cessna 150 light aircraft, crashing into a paddock near Bacchus Marsh Aerodrome in Parwan, around 50 kilometres northwest of Melbourne.

He died at the scene.

His sister Nicole Miller said Jack grew up “always watching all the old war movies with the planes that would take off”.

“He would soak up everything that he saw,” she said via 7NEWS.

Nicole, 32, was stunned when she received the call with the devastating news.

“I couldn’t believe it, I thought surely not, because that wouldn’t happen to such a great boy like Jack,” she said.

The Miller family had planned to celebrate Jack’s 21st birthday in just a few weeks, but now they are left facing the shattering reality of marking that milestone without him.

“It’s gonna be a really difficult day for everybody,” she admitted. “He’s not gonna be here for his 21st birthday that we would have loved to have celebrated.”

Pilot’s ‘haunting’ explanation for fatal crash

His sister described him as “effortlessly authentic, caring and kind-hearted”.

“He’s just my hero. I can’t believe how lucky I am to have had such an amazing brother,” she said.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has launched an investigation into the crash, examining flight data, map the site, and analyse the pilot and aircraft records to determine what went wrong.

But Nicole said the outcome of the investigation won’t change the devastating loss.

“Whatever happened doesn’t change the outcome at the end of the day,” she said.

“We still don’t have him, and nothing will ever fix the place he had in our lives.

“Not many people can say they went out doing exactly what they loved doing.”
