Fury as Melbourne P-plater displays Nazi swastika on West Gate Bridge
There has been fury from a civil-rights group after a Melbourne P-plater was snapped displaying the Nazi swastika while driving over a busy bridge.
A leading civil rights organisation has responded with outrage after a Melbourne P-plater was snapped brazenly displaying the Nazi swastika while driving across the West Gate Bridge.
Another shocked driver spotted the large swastika in the rear window of a VW Golf in front of him as the probationary driver was crossing the bridge outbound on Christmas Eve morning.
The witness, who did not want to be named, said he became so enraged that he began yelling in anger at the car in front of him.
He said the P-plate driver brazenly displaying the Nazi symbol was a heavily built man who appeared to be aged in his 20s.
Anti-Defamation Commission chairman Dvir Abramovich said the brazen display was “stomach-turning”.
“This is a stomach-turning outrage that is a stain on our community,” he said.
“It is simply unacceptable that in 2020, people can proudly and brazenly display the Nazi swastika on our roads, a symbol that represents the pure evil.
“Exhibiting this emblem is like plunging a dagger in the heart of Holocaust survivors and spitting in the face of the Diggers who fought to defeat Hitler and his genocidal regime.”
The Anti-Defamation Commission has been leading a national campaign to ban the public displays of the Nazi swastika and Third Reich materials.
“We should be alarmed about anyone who so openly identifies with the monstrous crimes of the Third Reich since we know that a belief in such a dangerous ideology can lead to real-life violence,” Dr Abramovich said.
“This goes beyond freedom of expression, and we all have a responsibility to speak up when such hateful acts take place.”
Dr Abramovich called for the nation’s state and federal government to “close the lid on the disgusting phenomenon” and ban the public display of any symbol of the Third Reich.
Displaying the Nazi swastika is legal in Victoria.
