Four found dead in Melbourne home

Police are investigating whether four people found dead in a Melbourne home suffered a drug overdose - as dark new details about the tragedy emerge.

Police are investigating whether four people found dead inside the living room of a Melbourne home early this morning suffered a mass drug overdose.

Cops were called to the property in Broadmeadows, in the city’s northern suburbs, at around 2am and found the bodies of two women, a man and a 17-year-old.

Neighbour Cory, the uncle of the teenage boy, first spotted his nephew’s body on the floor before smashing a window to get into the house and calling police.

He told media at the scene he believed the deaths were drug-related.

Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said homicide detectives had found items inside the home that “may be drug paraphernalia”.

He said police were keeping an “open mind” during the investigation into the cause of deaths, admitting the influx of fentanyl in Australia was “something we’re certainly aware of and will keep in our minds”.

“I cannot say definitively whether (fentanyl) is involved,” he added.

Inspector Thomas also revealed three of the people found dead, including the teenager, were “known to police”.

The three males found dead were aged 37, 32 and 17, while the female was 42.

Only one of the dead was a resident and three were visiting the address, and all were last seen alive at 2am.

Forensic analysis of items in the house and post-mortem examinations of the bodies could take days or months, he said.

“I’ve come home to find him gone,” neighbour Cory told Sunrise.

“He was a kid, 17 years old.”

Cory said he believed the deaths were drug-related.

“I think (it might have been) a drug overdose, but I’m not too sure,” he told Today.

The relative said the discovery “tortured” him.

“I’ve come home to find family members in a house, deceased,” he said.

“I found them and it’s tortured me.”

Cory also revealed the tragic news that his teenage nephew, whom he described as a “brilliant boy”, is a new father of an 18-month-old girl.

When asked about the possibility of a drug overdose as has been suggested, Inspector Thomas said “that is a possibility ... it’s unusual to find four people deceased at the one property.”

“(There were) items that may be drug paraphernalia.

“It may be from a drug overdose – it may not.”

Insp Thomas added violence was not believed to be involved.

“There’s nothing at this stage to suggest there’s been any acts of violence,” he said

The scene was “very, very confronting and very traumatic” for those who first discovered the bodies, Insp Thomas said.

Items taken from the property along with, post mortems, are hoped to determine what had caused the deaths but Insp Thomas said that may take “days or months”.

The neighbours, a man and a woman, were also found dead, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Later on in the morning, distraught loved ones were seen outside the property, where the teenager’s grief-stricken mother reportedly broke down in tears.
