A fuming driver has been hit with a $110 fine for a lesser known parking offence most motorists have likely been guilty of at least once in their life.

The Melbourne local was busted this week on a residential street where they were parked on the kerb outside a house.

In a post to social media, they revealed they had been penalised for not parking close enough to the kerb.

Photos included in the post showed their vehicle hadn’t been parked any different to others nearby on the same street.

“Never seen this infringement before. Seems a bit harsh when looking at how others park on this street,” the post read.

“I can accept I could move over further but space has never been a particular issue on our road. I would have appreciated a warning or something.”

The blue sedan was barely 20 centimetres from the side of the road, as was a white ute parked a few metres behind it.

A photo taken of the road showed the car was parked slightly crooked, but it was far from obstructing the safe passage of passing vehicles.

The steep fine was largely thought to have been unjustified by more than 400 people who responded to the post.

“Challenge that. The admin time and expense it would take them, they’ll most likely write it off.

“I wonder how this got reported? Maybe a garbage truck or some other wide set council vehicle went past and struggled to squeeze through?” someone else wrote.

The driver confirmed no one, that he was aware of, had reported his car.

Rules for parallel parking on Victorian roads without a dividing line or strip stipulate the driver must simply position their vehicle so there is at least three metres of road clear for others to pass.

Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia have the same rule as Victoria, whereas in NSW, the ACT and the Northern Territory, drivers must simply park as close as possible to the kerb and in the same direction as the traffic, unless the road is one-way.
