Coping with grief

A teacher at a prestigious Melbourne school who died after child safety issues were raised posted a cryptic social media message the day before he died.

Director of learning enhancement and support at Melbourne Girls’ Grammar School David Simpson has been identified as the staff member who died.

Victoria Police had given the school directions in relation to Mr Simpson regarding mandatory reporting and child safety procedures at the school in South Yarra.

On August 17, the day before his death was announced to the school community, Mr Simpson posted a message to Twitter, now known as X.

His social media feed chiefly consisted of two subjects: childhood education and Carlton Football Club.

But on Thursday he simply posted a picture of a sunset over Melbourne with the words: “Be a good day”.

Mr Simpson had previously worked as the head of science at Haileybury, in Melbourne’s south east, the head of middle school at Tintern Grammar, in the city’s north east, and a teacher at St Helena Secondary College, in Eltham, in the northern suburbs.

“I am passionate about working with and through others to develop professional learning communities that are focused on continuous improvement – for the benefit of school networks, individual schools, educators and students,” Mr Simpson had written on LinkedIn.

Speaking to the Herald Sun, a fellow teacher at Melbourne Girls’ Grammar, said the school was in “utter shock” at Mr Simpson’s death.

“The school has been offering support and counselling to staff and students.”

“The school’s staff followed the Child Safety and Mandatory Reporting Procedures.

“As a school our priorities are focused on the safety and wellbeing of our students and community. We will always act in the best interests of the children in our care.”

The statement said the school had reported its findings to police which issued directions.
