Cops’ next move against rollercoaster victim Shylah Rodden

Police have made a decision on criminal charges against a young woman who was nearly killed in a horrific rollercoaster accident.

Police have dropped charges against a young woman who was nearly killed in a horrific rollercoaster accident last year.

Shylah Rodden, 26, had been scheduled to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday on theft charges allegedly committed before her accident, which had left her in an induced coma.

Documents released by the court reveal Ms Rodden was charged with two offences, stealing a Samsung S20 mobile valued at $1000 in Melbourne on August 5 2021 and committing an indictable offence on while on bail.

But police announced before magistrate Frances Medina they would not continue with the charges.

Ms Rodden suffered catastrophic injuries when she was struck by a rollercoaster at the Melbourne Royal Show in September.

She remains bedridden at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and was only taken out of an induced coma in November.

It’s understood that on the day of the accident Ms Rodden had been working at a friend’s stall at the show when the pair decided to go for a rollercoaster ride to kill time.

According to reports, Ms Rodden tried to retrieve her phone after she dropped it on the tracks before she was struck by a carriage travelling about 70 km/h.

She suffered significant injuries to her pelvis, arms, legs and back.

“The injuries are horrific. Horrific. She’s brain damaged,” her father told The Daily Mail in October.

After an initial investigation, WorkSafe Victoria declared The Rebel Coaster safe to reopen just days after the accident.

The accident also occurred at a tumultuous period for Ms Rodden whose brother died earlier in 2022.

A GoFundMe for Ms Rodden’s recovery has so far raised more than $25,000, with the page mentioning renovations to her house, such as the shower and toilet, as among the necessary changes.

Victoria Police has been contacted by NCA NewsWire for comment.
