Melbourne has rejoiced the return of the beloved Bunnings sausage sizzle, with stores across the state kickstarting the burners.
Melburnians are rejoicing the return of the famous Bunnings sausage sizzle, which has been placed in deep freeze since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.
Victorians lined up at the major hardware chain on Saturday for a classic sausage in bread, following the nationwide restart of the retailer’s community fundraising program.
The quintessential Bunnings sausage sizzle allows community groups to raise money for local initiatives and charity.
Bunnings on Friday confirmed more than 400 community groups would be able to fire up the barbecue over Saturday and Sunday, expecting to sell more than 200,000 snags.
“We know that our customers have also really missed supporting their local community groups by picking up a snag as part of their Bunnings visit, and our store teams can’t wait to help restart this weekend tradition,” Bunnings chief operating officer Deb Poole said.
“It’s such a special milestone for our community groups and Bunnings team in Melbourne, as we have really missed helping to put them on.”
The smell of frying onions has been absent from Bunnings stores for the best part of 2020, as health restrictions during the health crisis prevented sausage sizzles from occurring.
Victoria has been the last state to fire up the gas burners due to the second wave, which put the country’s second most populous city into hard lockdown.
The retailer has put in place an array of additional measures to keep people safe, including a new layout that enables physical distancing, increased cleaning requirements and hygiene processes.
Bunnings’ community sausage sizzles have been going for 26 years, with roughly 40,000 fundraisers occurring each year.
