Commuters heading into Melbourne on Monday morning faced a nightmare trip after a truck struck a rail bridge in Melbourne’s outer east.

Trains were suspended in both directions on the Lilydale and Belgrave lines as crews worked to free a truck lodged under a Warrandyte Rd bridge in Ringwood.

Metro Trains said there were major delays of up to 60 minutes as commuters waited for replacement buses to arrive.

The left lane of Warrandyte Rd was also closed northbound before the Maroondah Highway.

Lanes were also closed on the Tullamarine, Princes and Monash freeways due to separate breakdowns this morning.
