A man is dead and another had to be plucked from the water after their boat capsized.

A man is dead after his boat capsized at Barwon Heads in Victoria on Sunday.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene just before 7am after reports a boat had overturned near the river mouth.

Victorian Police said two men were in the boat before it was swamped by a wave.

One of the men was trapped underneath the overturned boat.

He was pulled from the water by Life Saving Victoria but was declared dead at the scene.

“Tragic scenes at #OceanGrove #BarwonHeads unfolding after a brutal swell across the bar finds another victim..,” said one man on X, formerly Twitter, who was present at the scene following the incident.

A 61-year-old Moriac man was plucked from the water by good Samaritans on jet skis before he was taken to hospital.

His injuries were not considered life threatening.

The incident is being investigated with a report to be prepared for the coroner.
