An award-winning Bellarine Peninsula house where singers including Megan Washington, Vance Joy and Kinky Friedman have played in the on-site recording studio is tuning up for a sale.

Located near Lake Connewarre, the 4.86ha waterfront property at 15 Maloneys Rd, Leopold, is on the market with a $5.75m price tag.

The home also features a pool, combined sports oval and helipad, olive grove, fruit tree orchard and three outdoor baths set on a raised deck.

Designed by noted architect Kerstin Thompson, it received both the 2005 Victorian Coastal Award for Building and Building Design and the 2003 Australian Institute of Architects’ Victorian Chapter Harold Desbrowe-Annear Award, which recognises each year’s best residential project.

The owner said the soundproofed recording studio with a floating floor was mostly for friends and relatives in the music industry to use.

Former You Am I leader singer Tim Rogers and ARIA-nominated singer Emma Louise have utilised the space, in addition to the late US country singer-songwriter Kinky Friedman who visited while on tour.

The long, dark-coloured house was designed to integrate with its surrounding environment.

American singer, songwriter and novelist Richard “Kinky” Friedman, who died in June, stayed at the home while touring Australia.

The owner said Thompson designed the house to both integrate with the surrounding natural landscape and best showcase the lake views.

It’s divided into three pavilions, the main three-bedroom residence, a self-contained guest apartment and garage.

The kitchen is equipped with a 900mm Ilve oven and Bosch dishwasher, while servery windows connect the home to an outdoor deck.

And a pivot door leads to a secret room.

“If the door was closed, you’d think it was a wall – it opens to a television and entertainment room,” the owner said.

Three baths on a raised deck are the ideal spot to stargaze.

North Melbourne-based architect Kerstin Thompson designed the house. She has received multiple accolades for her work including on NSW’s Bundanon Art Museum & Bridge and the Melbourne Holocaust Museum.

The sports oval has hosted croquet days and special events, under marquees.

The main bedroom has a walk-through wardrobe, ensuite and walls of glazing that open to an exterior deck.

Describing himself as a “cricket tragic”, the owner has a heavy roller which he uses to create a cricket pitch on the oval.

After a friend once landed in a helicopter on the oval, they began calling it a helipad too.

There’s plenty more to impress guests include the solar- and gas-heated pool with an in-built cleaning function, and the pool house featuring a steam room, plunge pool and shower.

Paths wind through the property to the lake where a raised deck provides storage for watercraft.

The home makes the most of its lake views.

“One of the really cool things about the home is that it’s surrounded by acreages,” the owner said.

“I’m 10 minutes to Geelong, three minutes to shopping centres, 15 minutes to Ocean Grove to surf and seven minutes to Bunnings – but when you’re in the house you can’t hear a car and you feel like you’re in the middle of the bush.”

Birdlife including eagles to small native wrens visit the property.

The home is also known as “House at Lake Connewarre”.

Bellarine Property director Levi Turner said a peacock named Percy, who lives at the address, could be included in the sale if the buyer was interested.

Mr Turner said buyers from the Bellarine, Geelong and Melbourne had inquired about the house.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if someone buys it as a weekender, as it’s so private and secluded,” he said.
