A grand Victorian home steeped in history has come on the market in the heart of Hawthorn with near $10m price hopes.

The heritage-listed, five-bedroom abode, Cleveland, at 200 Barkers Rd, was built in 1888 and was designed by notable architects of the time F. de Garis and Son.

Sellers Lesley and John Rocchi are moving on from their sprawling property after 37 years, and in that time they’ve extended the rear of the residence and added personal touches.

Rocchi says she and her husband added the extension to mimic the tone of the house with very high ceilings offering plenty of light.

“We just basically touched up the whole house, upstairs and renovated bathrooms,” she says.

Her favourite part of the home is that it was the central hub for her four children who always had their friends around when they lived there.

It’s understood the home is so grand, it was able to cater to a one of her children’s birthday parties which included pony rides.

Cleveland spans about 1576sq m and features high ceilings, marble open fireplaces, tall arched windows and original timber floors throughout.

There’s a mix of spaces in their original form, including formal sitting and dining rooms as well as a library with built-in bookcases, all on the ground floor.

Upstairs, four generously-sized bedrooms can be found with two including built-in wardrobes and fireplaces, as well as a third with an adjoining study.

A major drawcard of the property is its travertine terrace with a covered pergola.

Jellis Craig Boroondara agent Mike Beardsley says the residence has an incredibly beautiful facade and is a great entertainer’s home.

“It’s got an immaculate landscaped garden that the vendors have manicured and looked after for 37 years,” Beardsley says.
