The Good Friday Appeal will help fund the Art Therapy Program at The Royal Children’s Hospital.

The program offers children a creative way to express themselves while coping with the emotional toll associated with hospitalisation, illness and treatments.

In an announcement on Saturday, Good Friday Appeal chairman Penny Fowler expressed her delight in being able to help fund the program.

“The Good Friday Appeal is pleased to support and fund the Art Therapy program for sick children at the Royal Children’s Hospital,’’ she said.

“Art therapy supports the children’s recovery and brings enjoyment in what can be a challenging time,” Ms Fowler said.

“We thank the community for their generous support and donations to make this happen.”

Royal Children’s Hospital chief executive Peter Steer said he was thrilled to see the program continue with the support of the Good Friday Appeal.

“Using art as therapy makes a real difference in the lives of children,” Mr Steer said.

“It offers the opportunity to not only support their recovery, but also bring comfort, joy and a sense of normalcy during their hospital stay.

“This work is truly special, and we are immensely grateful for the Good Friday Appeal’s support.”

The funding announcement follows reports arts therapists would be cut at The Royal Children’s Hospital cancer centre under staffing changes.

A Royal Children’s Hospital spokesperson said care for children at the hospital would not be compromised.

“We’re carefully considering changes to the CCC (Children’s Cancer Centre) to ensure services evolve sustainably over time,” the spokesperson said.

“The CCC will continue to be an international leader in the treatment of childhood cancer. “The exceptional medical care children receive at the RCH will not be compromised.”

The Good Friday Appeal will celebrate its 94th year in 2025. The appeal will be hosted on April 18.
