Former Coles ‘Down Down’ guy lists rare mid-century Beaumaris home
Former Coles and Woolworths CMO Tony Phillips has put his Yuncken Freeman-designed Beaumaris house on the market for the first time in 23 years. See inside.
A rare mid-century modern pad in Beaumaris held for more than 20 years by ex-Coles ‘Down Down’ CMO Tony Phillips is being eyed off by interstate buyers.
Mr Phillips, a former chief marketing officer for the likes of Woolworths, Coles and NewsCorp, purchased the 11-13 Lang St home in 1999 for $1,017,500, according to CoreLogic records.
But after 23 years property prices are up up, with the four-bedroom house now for sale with an $8m-$8.8m price tag.

During his marketing stint at Coles, Mr Phillips was behind the supermarket giant’s controversial ‘Down Down’ campaign which saw it engage iconic British rock band Status Quo as an advertising partner.
He was also responsible for bringing in celebrity chef Curtis Stone as the face of the company and assisted with MasterChef and My Kitchen Rules sponsorships.
The Beaumaris abode was originally built in 1950 by renowned architectural firm Yuncken Freeman and has since been gradually renovated over time by the marketing executive, who now heads up influencer marketing company The Influence Group alongside former Coles colleague Henry Tajer.
Kay & Burton Bayside agent Tommy McIntosh said the home had only three owners in its lifetime, including the current vendors who were “lovers of all things furniture and style”.
“They’ve restored it really tastefully with plans from Monash University and the landscaping they did themselves,” Mr McIntosh said. “It’s just a stunning mid-century modern home in a highly sought after street.”
The couple raised their children at the stylish pad, which features a solar-heated swimming pool and “Olympic-sized” in-ground trampoline.
“It’s a really unique offering, there’s been a lot of interest from NSW,” Mr McIntosh added.
“It’s like its only little private compound – I’ve had people tell me they peek over the fence all the time just to look at it.”
The 1695sq m property boasts a number of lavish features such as timber, marble, terrazzo and European oak floorboards and red carpet in the living room sourced to match the original.
A glamorous kitchen is complete with stainless-steel benchtops, Gaggenau and Miele appliances, a butler’s pantry, wine fridge and a walk-in 1500-bottle wine cellar.
