Fire crews called to Melbourne fruit store blaze

Emergency crews are trying to control a blazing inferno at a fruit packing store after employees were evacuated.

Hundreds of workers have been evacuated from a fruit packing store in Melbourne’s east that has gone up in flames.

Multiple fire crews from Country Fire Authority and Fire Rescue Victoria are working to contain the fierce blaze at the High Street building in Wantirna South on Tuesday.

Up to 200 workers were reported to have been evacuated and residents have been issued a smoke inhalation warning, according to Channel 9 News.

An advice message was issued for Glen Waverley and Wantirna South, as heavy black smoke can be seen in the area.

Authorities said there was currently no threat to surrounding properties, but residents are being urged to continue to monitor updates.

Heavy delays are also expected as peak hour begins to build.

One Melbourne resident told 3AW on Tuesday he could see a “lot of black smoke” from the Monash Freeway.

Another person on Twitter said they could see the smoke billowing from Hawthorn, about 30km away from the blaze.
