Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a woman on crutches was subjected to a brutal road rage attack, with her alleged attacker throwing punches even as she tried to crawl away.

Detectives on Friday released CCTV footage of a vehicle leaving the scene, calling for anyone in the area to come forward if they had seen something or have dashcam footage.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the 25-year-old was driving on Oravel St in Balwyn North about 6.30pm on Wednesday night when she was overtaken by a black Volkswagen Golf.

“The victim sounded her horn before the VW driver began to abruptly brake in front of her numerous times,” she said.

The woman pulled over nearby, but was subject to verbal abuse from the driver, a man believed to be in his 20s.

The woman, who was on crutches at the time, was punched in the head “a number of times” causing her to fall to the ground, the police spokeswoman said.

“He then proceeded to punch her to the head a number of times as she tried to crawl away,” she said.

“The offender was last seen fleeing north along Arama Street, then east onto Wandeen Street.”

Witnesses to the road rage attack, as well as the victim’s mother, called emergency services and she was taken to hospital with facial injuries.

The man responsible has been described as Southern European, aged in his 20s and about 175cm tall.
