Woman critical after being found on fire in Melbourne front yard

Charges have been laid after a woman was allegedly set alight at a party when she tried to intervene in a dispute between neighbours.

A woman is fighting for life after she was allegedly set on fire in the front yard of a Melbourne home following a dispute between neighbours.

Police believe the fire began during a verbal altercation outside the home on Rivercoast Rd in Werribee South, 30km west of the city, about 2am on Wednesday.

The woman, 32, suffered life-threatening injuries as a result of significant burns and was flown to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.

It is believed the woman had been trying to defuse the situation between neighbours when she was attacked.

Police on Wednesday night charged a 43-year-old Werribee South man with attempted murder, conduct endangering life, intentionally causing serious injury and recklessly causing serious injury.

He was remanded in custody and will appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

A 45-year-old woman was released pending further inquiries.

Two other people received minor injuries during the incident, including a teenager, who was taken to Sunshine Hospital with upper and lower body injuries.

A crime scene was established at the home, with photographs showing several plastic evidence tags laid in the yard alongside scattered items by police.

The investigation was led by the Victoria Police Arson and Explosives Squad, with a blue Esky examined for evidence and soil from the scene of the fire taken to test for the presence of an accelerant.
