Police have arrested a man over the brutal double killings of two siblings in Melbourne more than 30 years ago.
A man has been arrested over the brutal double murder of an elderly man and his sister more than 30 years ago in Melbourne.
Victoria Police confirmed they arrested the 58-year-old Rowville man on Thursday morning, just more than a week after they announced a $1 million reward for information into the case.
Doris McCartney, 71, and Ronald Swann, 69, were found dead in their home in Keith Street, Moorabbin, on October 22, 1989.
They had been assaulted but police did not know who killed them or why.
The man is being interviewed by detectives.
Ms McCartney, a mother of three, was deaf, and after the death of her husband, her brother moved in with her.
“They both loved to punt and were well known at the Moorabbin TAB, I would’ve thought,” Ms McCartney’s son Ian McCartney told reporters on March 30.
“She liked her Tattslotto. They probably liked a beer on a Saturday or Friday night.”
Mr McCartney said the family wanted closure after so long with no answers.
“For heaven’s sake, why?” he asked.
“It’s just got us beat.
“A 71-year-old woman, deaf, she was loved at Philip Morris (where she had worked). The grandkids loved her.
“We really would love answers.
“There’s not a day in 31 years I haven’t thought about it.”
More to come.
