Prison drug bust: drone used to traffic illicit drugs into facility

Two people have been arrested after a milk carton was discovered inside a prison, containing illicit drugs and nicotine patches.

A man and woman have been charged with drug trafficking charges after a drone was found to have been transporting drugs into a Victorian prison.

It is alleged that in March of this year a milk carton was discovered inside a facility in Truganina, found to contain illicit drugs and nicotine patches.

An investigation led to the arrest of a 39-year-old Mount Waverley man and a 31-year-old Brunswick West woman.

Police searched two properties on Thursday July 13 and seized a drone, four grams of methyl amphetamine, 3.2 grams of heroin and a sword, among other items.

North West Metro Regional Crime Squad Detective Inspector Patrick Watkinson said offenders had been known to go to “great lengths” to smuggle items into prisons.

“We work very closely with Corrections Victoria to prevent and detect any criminal activity within the prison system,” he said.

“For those who attempt to breach the security of our prisons we will work hard to ensure that you face becoming a resident and not a guest at one of the facilities.”

Both were charged with trafficking a drug of dependence, introducing an item into a prison and possessing drugs.

The man was also charged with several other offences, including possessing a prohibited weapon.

He was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court today while the woman was bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on October 26.
