A man shot by police after allegedly brandishing a screwdriver at officers in Melbourne’s north was wanted for questioning over a fatal stabbing.

The 64-year-old from Broadmeadows allegedly attempted to evade police in his vehicle, then on foot, on Monday afternoon in Coburg North.

He was shot by a detective after allegedly brandishing a screwdriver at officers following a short foot pursuit.

It’s believed the officer fired at least two shots, hitting the man twice in the upper body, North West Metro Region Acting Commander Rick Paterson said.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital in a stable condition, under police guard.

His condition was not life-threatening.

Commander Paterson said the man was wanted for questioning over the death of a 56-year-old man who died from stab wounds in Albanvale on Saturday. No charges have been laid.

The shooting occurred on Newlands Road about 4.40pm.

Police said they had spotted the man driving a vehicle nearby and attempted to pull him over.

“It’s believed the man saw the police and took off in his vehicle with police in pursuit,” police said in a statement.

A short distance away, two Crime Investigation Unit detectives chased the man on foot, when he allegedly confronted them with the screwdriver.

An officer responded by shooting the man.

Commander Paterson said he had not spoken directly to the officers involved, but it would be a “really difficult time for them”.

“No one comes to work wanting to be involved in a critical incident,” he said on Monday night.

“This is a traumatic incident for them.

“We’ll be supporting the members through this difficult period.”

The incident was not related to any outlaw bikie activity and posed no ongoing threat to the community, he added.

The incident would be investigated by Armed Crime Squad detectives, with oversight by Professional Standards Command, as per normal procedure when a police firearm is discharged, police said.

No one else was injured in the incident.

Anyone with further details is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
