Police search for speed camera vigilante behind horror attack
A man has allegedly violently attacked a mobile speed camera – smashing the vehicle with a metal rod while the terrified operator was inside.
Police are searching for a man they allege went on a violent rampage against a mobile speed camera vehicle while the terrified female operator watched from inside.
Police will allege that a man – believed to be in his 20s – concealed himself in bushes before approaching the vehicle on Murradoc Road in St Leonards, near Geelong.
Around 3.50pm on April 25, the man allegedly emerged from the bushes wearing a scarf around the lower half of his face, sunglasses and a black beanie to hide his identity.
Police allege the young man pressed two boards with nails into each side of the front tyre.
He then swung a long metal rod into the wing mirrors of the car, smashing the glass, as well as damaging the antenna and battering the driver’s side door.
The female security company employee who was inside the unmarked vehicle throughout the entire attack activated her personal alarm.
The man then fled on foot in the direction of St Leonards.
He is described as caucasian in appearance, aged in his 20s, about 175cm tall and skinny.
Community and Public Sector Union spokesman Julian Kennelly told radio station 3AW the attack appeared to be “pre-planned”.
“The perpetrator has, we suspect, pre-planned it because they have arrived at the vehicle with a hoodie, mask, gloves on and then attacked the vehicle with an iron pole and then placed these pieces of wood that have the nails on them either side of the front wheels right across the width of the vehicle,” he said.
“She was completely immobilised and stuck in the vehicle while this was occurring.”
Geelong Highway Patrol Sergeant Fletcher Pearson told the Geelong Advertiser the operator was “very vulnerable” and police were determined to track down the offender.
Police are appealing with anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
