Police launch investigation into targeted Melbourne killing
A 27-year-old man has died in a targeted drive-by shooting at a busy big city shopping centre.
A young man has died in an apparent targeted drive-by shooting at a busy shopping centre in suburban Melbourne.
A number of shots were fired outside the Craigieburn Central shopping centre just before 3pm on Saturday.
A 27-year-old Craigieburn man died at the scene on Windrock Ave while paramedics took a 28-year-old Hadfield man to hospital with serious injuries.
It is understood the attacker opened fire near the shopping centre’s Timezone arcade.
Photos from the scene show the front passenger window of a white car busted with several bullet holes.
Homicide investigators are on scene and police have cordoned off the area.
In a statement from Saturday evening, the police said they believed two males were sitting in a vehicle in the shopping centre carpark on Windrock Avenue just before 3pm when a number of unknown males approached on foot.
“Multiple shots were fired, hitting both men inside the car,” a police spokesman said.
“The offenders fled in a black Range Rover Sport which was later located burnt out on Broad Street in Westmeadows.
“It is believed four males fled from that vehicle and are yet to be located at this stage.
“Officers are still working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident however at this early stage the incident appears to be targeted.”
The 28-year-old man remains in hospital.
Elevate 24:7 Fitness worker Veronica Estimova, who works close by to the scene of the attack, told The Herald Sun she heard “loud bangs”.
“It was quite scary, we didn’t know what was going on,” Ms Estimova said.
“A group of people ran into the gym and said there had been a drive-by shooting, they said they saw a young man lying on the ground.”
