A pregnant mother has suffered sleepless nights after a man threatened to kill her and her unborn child in an attempted carjacking in Melbourne’s southeast.

Shruthi Sheshagiri had travelled to an Ampol service station in Huntingdale with her husband Mahesh Sriramaiah and their five-year-old son at about 9.30pm on March 17.

The family was sitting inside the car when the man suddenly approached.

In an unprovoked attack, the perpetrator began striking the car, screaming and threatening to kill Ms Sheshagiri’s unborn baby.

“An unknown male kicked the passenger side of the victim’s car and also punched the victim’s passenger window,” police said.

“The assailant threatened to kill the victim’s pregnant wife, who was in the car at the time of the unprovoked attack, if the victim didn’t open the door.”

Ms Sheshagiri told 9 News that the man became “furious” after seeing she was pregnant and began hitting her window.

“I will kill your baby,” the man shouted, according to Ms Sheshagiri.

The family quickly sped away, notifying police, and the man shortly left the scene on a motorbike.

Detectives on Monday morning arrested a 47-year-old Clayton South man over the alleged attacks.

The man is facing a string of charges, including making threats to kill, criminal damage, disqualified driving, riding an unregistered vehicle, and committing indictable offences while on bail.

Police charged the man with common law assault, unlawful assault, aggravated burglary, theft, and trespassing over a separate assault on a 19-year-old man in Clayton on March 23.

He was also charged over another unrelated home burglary and was remanded to appear at the Moorabbin Magistrates Court on April 12.
