Police found an injured man near the intersection of Spencer and Lonsdale streets about 3.30am on Monday.
The 26-year-old man was found with a suspected gunshot wound to the upper body.
He was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
A Victoria Ambulance spokesperson confirmed that he was transported to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.
Detectives are set to investigate whether those involved are known to each other.
Police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
