TRADERS have called for more police to patrol a popular Melbourne street on weekends after a violent street brawl left two people in hospital.

Chairs and tables were wielded like weapons in the attack along Lygon St, Brunswick, on Friday night.

Families eating in Melbourne's Little Italy ran for cover as 20 teenagers battled for nearly an hour on the popular strip, destroying furniture and smashing windows before police arrived about 11.30pm.

The fighting left the front of the Hanging Gardens Restaurant and Grill in ruins, with a window of a nearby chicken shop being broken at an estimated cost of $1500.

Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Erin Marie said paramedics took two teenage boys to Royal Melbourne Hospital with upper body injuries after the assault.

Another man was treated by paramedics for non-life threatening injuries.

Victoria Police spokesman Thomas O’Byrne said no official complaint had been made about the incident.

But restaurateur Camil Tarevski told Channel 9 news he wanted to see more police patrolling the area on the weekend.

“I’d like more police around, at least on Friday and Saturday night,” he said.

“It’s really, really bad what the young generation are doing, going out and looking for trouble.”
