Details have emerged about the moments before a Melbourne mother was fatally stabbed at her home.
Vicky Van Aken, 51, died after being stabbed multiple times on the doorstep of her home in Bayswater, east of Melbourne about 11.15am on Saturday.
Police will allege she was trying to protect a teenage boy who was seeking refuge from the man, who lived next door, when the attack happened.
It’s understood she was home with two sons at the time.
Police allege the perpetrator was Milorad Zaric.
They allege Zaric, 47, arrived at the Cousin Drive property with a knife.
Police allege the man stabbed the 51-year-old mother first, attacking her several times.
The 47-year-old, who works as a carpenter, then returned home, where he was arrested a short time later and taken to hospital under a police guard.
It’s understood his relatives were repairing damage inside his home when the alleged incident occurred.
On Sunday morning, the accused killer appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court and was charged with murder.
The court was told the man, who works as a carpenter and has never been in custody before, was experiencing withdrawal from alcohol and drugs.
Homicide detectives returned to the scene later in the afternoon.
Zaric is remanded in custody and will appear before court on February 14.
