A MAN was hit with a metal pole by a gang of robbers targeting car keys outside a suburban Melbourne gym early this morning.
Police are hunting four men, described as of African appearance, following the attack in Glenroy.
Following the assault, a female witness was forced to flee and lock herself in her car as she was afraid the group would turn on her.
Leading Senior Constable Lee Thomson said the victim was approached by the men on Pascoe Vale Rd just before 5.30am.
“Police have been told the males then used a metal pole to strike the man on the head, causing him to drop his backpack,” Sen-Constable Thomson said.
“The males then allegedly took items from the backpack, including car keys, and approached the victims’ car.
“Once going through the vehicle, the males began to leave.”
A woman exited a nearby gym and came across the hurt victim.
“Upon seeing him she also saw one of the males, who then turned and came towards her,” Sen-Constable Thomson said.
“She has told police she ran to her car, locked the doors and left the area before calling triple-0.
“The males then left the scene.”
Police are probing the scene.
