Notorious Melbourne gangland figure Tony Mokbel has been rushed to hospital with chest pains.

Mokbel, who has a history of cardiac issues, was taken to hospital on Thursday evening after experiencing the chest pains at Barwon Prison, near Geelong, the Herald Sun reported.

It follows a heart attack in 2012 and a hospitalisation in 2019 after he was stabbed multiple times by two inmates and entered cardiac arrest.

The vicious attack left him with a fractured skull, brain haemorrhaging and extensive bleeding.

The 56-year-old is serving a 30-year sentence for large-scale drug trafficking.

Tony Mokbel has been serving time since 2007 for drug trafficking.

Mokbel was jailed in 2007 amid alleged links to Melbourne’s gangland crimes, with police claiming he was the mastermind behind the city’s amphetamines trade.

He has been linked to slain underworld figure Carl Williams and was charged but not convicted of two murders in the Melbourne gangland war.

Mokbel disappeared from Melbourne while on trial in March 2006 but was extradited to Australia in June 2007 to face the charges.

He was convicted of drug trafficking and has been serving a sentence.

But since 2020 Mokbel has appealed against his convictions linked to the Lawyer X scandal involving former Melbourne lawyer Nicola Gobbo, who was a registered police informer and had been representing him.

Mokbel had a conviction quashed in 2020 over the importation of a commercial quantity of cocaine in 2000 because of the scandal.
