Sickening chants as neo-Nazis storm protest

A group of alleged neo-Nazis, concealing their identity with black balaclavas and sunglasses, shouted sickening slurs as they stormed a Melbourne refugee protest.

Neo-Nazis crash refugee rally in Melbourne

A gang of alleged neo-Nazis chanting “white power” and “hail victory” were sent marching after coming face to face with a wall of police at a refugee protest.

The small group, concealing their identities with black balaclavas and sunglasses, gatecrashed the protest in Melbourne’s Docklands on Tuesday night.

A group of asylum seekers have slept outside the Department of Home Affairs building for the last three months demanding refugee status.

Their permanent visa applications were rejected when the Labor government abolished the flawed “fast-track” process in July.

On Tuesday, the 100th and final night of the protest encampment, about 20 men dressed in black stormed the area.

A heaving crowd of supporters and asylum seekers chanted “refugees are welcome here, Nazis are not” as police deployed pepper spray and drove the group down a cleared street.

Dramatic footage captured the moment the men returned to the scene and faced off with the protesters in a park as police tried to separate the groups.

Some members of the black-clad men held a banner reading “f*** off we’re full.”

“Show us your f***ing faces you weak pieces of s***. Show us your faces. Take off your glasses you f***ing c***,” one protester screamed, goading one of the men into pulling down his balaclava.

Police said a group of 20 people had attended the rally just before 6pm.

“Officers formed a line to separate the two groups before they were forced to deploy OC spray,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

“The groups dispersed and there were no arrests or reports of injuries.

“Police will assess the circumstances surrounding the demonstration and review vision of the incident and people involved.”

The protesting refugees have been in a “state of limbo for more than 12 years” as they fight for permanent visas, according to the Tamil Refugee Council.

“From the day we started the encampment, the refugees brought so much energy to the campaign. They’re really desperate for a resolution,” the group’s spokesperson Aran Mylvaganam told The Age.

“When the Nazis turned up, there was a bit of disruption, but they were chased away, the energy was maintained, and people continued on with the rally.

“[But] it’s obviously a horrifying experience for a lot of refugees who’ve fled similar sort of issues in their homeland … and they are fighting for their basic rights.”
