PE teacher Scott Korczynski had sex with 17-year-old student but won’t be jailed

Scott Korczynski was in his 30s when he started inviting the young girl into his office at Kurranjang Secondary College in Melton, Melbourne.

What drives a teacher to have a relationship with their student?

A PE teacher had admitted having sex with a 17-year-old student - but he won't serve a day in jail.

Scott Korczynski was in his 30s when he started inviting the young girl into his office at Kurranjang Secondary College in Melton, Melbourne.

He would also take her to football matches, drive her home and later kissed her, a court heard.

Weeks later, Korczynski, now a 49-year-old father-of-two, picked his victim up from a birthday party and had sex with her in the back of his car, the Herald Sun reported.

The court previously heard how the “relationship” started shortly after Korczynski was dumped by his fiancee.

“This gives some context for what you did: you engaged the attention of a student some 13 years your junior,” Judge Fiona Todd said.

“There was an enormous power imbalance between you and her at the time of your offending against her.”

The pair continued to see each other after the victim turned 18, but she eventually ended the relationship.

She reported Korczynski to the police in 2017 and he was charged in 2020.

Korczynski admitted one count of sexual penetration of a 17-year-old child who at the time was under his care, supervision or authority.

He faced a maximum sentence of 10 years, but instead was jailed for 19 months, with the sentence wholly suspended for three years.

If he commits an offence during that time, he will be imprisoned.

The victim told the court how she felt “intense shame and embarrassment” .

“She can now reflect … at the time she was actually a very vulnerable young girl who was mistreated by you in a very serious way,” Judge Todd said.

“None of it was her fault, this is what you did to her.”

Korczynski was made to sign the sex offenders’ register for 15 years and will not be allowed to coach sports or teach again.
