Melbourne cook admits ‘cruel’ treatment of wife kept as slave for two years

A man has admitted to using “cruel” and inhumane methods to keep his wife as a slave for two years.

Does modern slavery exist in Australia?

A Melbourne cook has admitted he forced his wife into slavery for more than two years.

The 25-year-old pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated servitude, assault and cannabis possession in the Victorian Supreme Court on Thursday.

“Guilty,” he said standing with his arms behind his back as each charge was read.

According to the particulars of the charge, he used “cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment” to keep a woman in servitude over a period of 28 months.

The offending occurred between April 2021 and August 2023, ending on his arrest.

He further pleaded guilty to two counts of assault between July 2020 and January 2021 when, on one occasion, he “dragged” the woman by the hair to his vehicle.

In court, his lawyer Jim McGarvie requested the case be adjourned to allow a forensic psychologist to prepare a report.

The case was adjourned for a presentence hearing in February next year by judicial registrar Tim Freeman.

Previously, the court was told the case is likely to be the first sentence handed down for the charge of aggravated servitude.
