AN INTERNATIONAL student was fatally bashed in Melbourne’s Chinatown over a love feud, a court has been told.

Long Xiang Hu, 19, a student at Melbourne’s Yarra Valley Grammar school, was assaulted in La Trobe Place on April 15 and later died in hospital.

Three people face charges over his death, with two of them appearing in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Detective Victor Anastasiadis told the court that Mr Hu, also known as Jeremy, had gone out to Chinatown to meet a 17-year-old, and they had a falling out over a love interest.

Punches were thrown and then others jumped in and assaulted Mr Hu.

One man allegedly stomped on Mr Hu’s head repeatedly until he was unconscious.

Mr Anastasiadis told the court CCTV had captured another woman, Sirui Luo, 22, kicking Mr Hu in the abdomen as he lay unconscious in the laneway.

“It was one of the worst examples of kicking a man when he’s down,” Mr Anastasiadis said.

Luo, representing herself in court on Thursday, denied kicking Mr Hu.

She told Magistrate Peter Dunn through an interpreter she didn’t intentionally get caught up in the fight.

Police don’t know if it was a prearranged confrontation, or if Mr Hu and the 17-year-old had just agreed to meet up and talk.

The court heard Luo, who is in Australia on a student visa, is no longer attending university, doesn’t have a job and has no family in the country.

Based on those facts, Ms Dunn couldn’t grant bail and remanded Luo to appear in the court again on August 17.

Luo’s co-accused, Hanjie Liu, appeared in court by video link, charged with affray and common law assault but did not apply for bail.

His lawyer Sarah Pratt told the court it was his first time in custody and he spoke limited English.

He too was remanded in custody to reappear on August 17.

Another Chinese national, 22-year-old Shengliang Wan, has already faced court charged with Mr Hu’s murder and he is due to reappear again in August.

Mr Hu’s family was in the court and yelled at Luo in Mandarin during the hearing.
