A meeting of local leaders with a mentally unwell community member ended in tragedy on Saturday, police allege.
Luqman Abdishakur Ahmed, 30, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday charged with murder and intentionally causing serious injury, after he allegedly went into a stabbing frenzy with a kitchen knife in a North Melbourne unit.
One man was killed, and another was injured when he used his bare hand to grab the knife Mr Ahmed was wielding, police allege in a summary tendered to the court.
“The deceased, in the company of four other Somalian community leaders, attended a unit in North Melbourne to visit Luqman Abdishakur Ahmed who had allegedly been having mental health issues,” police say.
Mr Ahmed is alleged to have armed himself with a kitchen knife and stabbed the man in the neck, killing him with only one blow.
He is also alleged to have chased a friend around the unit while trying to stab him, before the friend grabbed the knife and Mr Ahmed pulled it back, slicing it through his friend’s fingers.
The friend suffered “significant lacerations”, police say.
The alleged murder victim died in hospital after emergency services were called to the Sutton Street apartment about 11.40am on Saturday.
The court on Monday heard Mr Ahmed needed to see a nurse in relation to his medications in prison.
He did not apply for bail and will next appear in court in April.
