The alleged murderer of 23-year-old Celeste Manno was taken to hospital after an apparent bid to take his own life in the past week.

Luay Sako was found by prison staff in a yard within the Melbourne Assessment Prison after an attempt to harm himself, Corrections Victoria sources said.

The 36-year-old did not attend a court hearing on Tuesday but prison workers told the court it was because he had refused.

The prison staff were doing a round on the level when they came across the distressing scene, sources said.

He was found on the floor and conveyed to hospital.

Police allege Mr Sako had formed an obsession with Ms Manno and was stalking her in the lead-up to her death.

They had worked together at a call centre.

The Roxburgh Park man is charged with murdering Ms Manno in the early hours of November 16 in her own home in Mernda where she lived with her family.

At a court hearing in June, Mr Sako’s lawyer asked for his medical records so he could be assessed by a forensic psychiatrist.

The court had previously heard he was not on medication and had no known mental health issues.

He will next appear in court in September.
