A MAN who used code words to discuss a “big operation” involving martyrdom in Syria has been jailed for five and a half years.
A NEW Zealand man who used code words to discuss a “big operation” involving martyrdom in Syria before boarding a flight to Istanbul has been jailed for five and a half years for attempting to enter a foreign state to engage in hostile activities.
Amin Mohamed, 26, “would not have lasted long” in Syria if he had succeeded in reaching “the frontline”, Victorian Supreme Court Justice Lex Lasry said in setting a minimum jail term of three and a half years on Thursday.
After Mohamed was prevented from leaving Brisbane in September 2013 he contacted the New Zealand passport office and lied about the purpose of his travel, saying he was visiting his fiancee in Denmark.
