CCTV shows moment fireworks explosion that killed teenager
Horrific CCTV footage has captured the moment fireworks detonated in a Melbourne suburb, killing a teenager on Christmas Day.
Footage of a fireworks explosion that killed a teenager in Melbourne’s northern suburbs has surfaced, with police describing the scene as “extremely distressing”.
Emergency services were called to a property in Kalkallo in Melbourne’s north about 9.10pm Wednesday after reports of a fireworks explosion.
A 19-year-old Whittlesea man was killed after fireworks reportedly exploded in his face, leaving him with critical injuries.
Despite best efforts from paramedics, the man was declared dead at the scene.
It is understood the man was with a friend when the fireworks were lit near a fenced-off construction area.
CCTV footage revealed the moment the explosives detonated, sending bright red sparks into the air and a loud bang that echoed through the suburb.
The sound was so loud it could reportedly be heard by the nearby housing estate.
Neighbours told the Herald Sun they were horrified to hear someone had died following the explosion.
“I don’t know where they’d find these crackers that make such a big explosion that (could) kill someone,” resident Pam Kumar said.
“That’s too dangerous.”
Another resident claimed to have “frequently” heard similar sounds in the same area in the days leading up to the incident and believe people accessed the construction site through a temporary fence that had fallen down, as reported by 7 News.
Victoria Police Acting Sergeant Fiona Parvin said the incident was “horrendous” and paid respects to the grieving family.
“(Christmas Day is) a day they will never ever see the same. It’s tragic,” she said.
Acting Sergeant Parvin said authorities were aware of the illegal sale of fireworks and explosives on social media pages and websites, and issued renewed warnings about the use of fireworks in the lead-up to New Year’s Eve.
“If you find out about any fireworks being sold, please report them to the police,” she said.
In Victoria, fireworks are classed as a type of explosive, and can only be used by licensed pyrotechnicians or those under their supervision.
“Fireworks should not be handled by the public,” she said. “They are highly volatile.
“They need to be handled by professionals, which is why they’re illegal.”
