Ballarat: Recycled brick home with historic brewery, pub remnants hits market in Brown Hill
The Ballarat estate has been in the one family for nearly 100 years, and was built using recycled materials from a number of historic sites.
An old-world Ballarat house made from recycled materials and remnants of a historic brewery has hit the market.
The 6 Orchard Lane property in Brown Hill has been with the same family since the 1920s, and looks as though it’s been plucked from a rural township — despite being within a short drive to the centre of Ballarat, local schools and public transport.
It’s for sale with a $2.35m-$2.585m price tag, led by Buxton Ballarat director Peter Burley.

Behind more than 464 sqm of recycled red bricks, sourced from the kiln section of the original Selkirk Brickworks in Melbourne, the home is brimming with charm and history.
The vendor’s grandfather purchased the 2.1ha block nearly 100 years ago and used about 25,000 bricks to construct the house.
It also features a kitchen with timber benchtops sourced from the original Ballarat Brewery, 150-year old floorboards from recycled timber yards, and doors collected and repurposed from old pubs.
“In terms of the history, the land has been in the family for generations and it was handed down to them,” Mr Burley said.
“They spent years in the planning stages to plan the home’s new build and design and some of the features are stunning. It has recycled materials throughout the whole build”
There’s also a wood combustion fireplace, two living rooms and a study, plus a spacious main bedroom at the rear with a walk-in wardrobe, ensuite with freestanding tub and separate toilet overlooking the pristine gardens.
Other impressive features include a wine cellar, edible orchard, chicken shed, and a huge 18m x 7.5m garage.
Plus, a planning permit is in place for subdivision across three allotments.
“It’s an interesting home in the context of a stunning escape to the country,” Mr Burley added.
“The land is actually zoned residential one so it has further development potential with existing planning in place.”
However, he said the vendors hoped the home was purchased by another family who would love it as much as they had.
“They’ve put a lot of work into the gardens, there’s an orchard and a veggie garden.”
