AUSTRALIAN fashionistas were the first in the world to get their hands on Alexander Wang’s much hyped collaboration with retailer H&M today.

Scores of keen shoppers began lining up at the GPO store at 6pm yesterday — a full 13 hours before store doors opened.

By the time the first group were allowed inside, thousands were queuing in the Bourke St Mall around the corner into Swanston Street.

The entire men’s collection and some key pieces from the women’s range sold out just hours after the first-in-the-world launch — meaning keen Aussie fashionistas got their hands on the items before Europe had even got out of bed.

Twenty-year-old Amanda from Southbank said she lined up at midnight before getting through the doors at 7.45am.

“I set myself a budget of $100 and got everything I wanted,” she said. “I can’t afford Alexander Wang’s clothes normally, so it’s awesome.”

There were similar scenes in Sydney where the collection was also launched, with the men’s line selling out in the first hour.

Caitlin Gerke was in line in North Ryde by 4.30am and said pieces from the women’s line had already disappeared by the time she got inside.

“It’s amazing,” the retail assistant said of the range.

“Alexander Wang is like a god to me.”

The fashion and accessories range, which is predominantly black and priced between $30-350, is the latest designer collaboration for the Swedish retail chain, which in the past has launched lines with Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney and Lanvin.

A H & M spokeswoman said demand took the retailer by surprise and the women’s range would sell out by the end of the day.

The most popular items were a grey cropped sweatshirt and a T-shirt dress.
