Adele wows fans in Melbourne

A RECORD crowd filled Etihad Stadium to hear British pop megastar Adele belt out a string of her hit songs.

There were 75,000 at the venue, the biggest crowd for any event since the ground opened in March 2000.

The singer-songwriter, 28, sang hits from her critically acclaimed 25 album as well as old favourites.

Fan Melanie McGrath said she had been listening to Adele non-stop for the past month: “The tone of her voice and melodies are amazing — I love her personality, it’s so offbeat,” she said.

Molly, Amber and Annie, all 9, travelled from Devonport in Tasmania with their mums to see Adele, who they dubbed as their “role model.”

REVIEW: Adele’s charm shines through to loyal crowd

Adele and her family slipped into town aboard a private jet early on Tuesday and she has kept a low profile in Melbourne.

A similar number of fans is expected for Adele’s second show tonight.

Tickets ranged in price from $100 to $800 to see Adele sing an 18-song set list beginning with Hello and ending with Someone Like You.

The concerts are likely to be a nice earner for the AFL, which bought Etihad Stadium late last year.

Until last night, the biggest crowd for a music concert at Etihad was 64,600 to see Robbie Williams in December 2008.

Earlier, despite extra transport services, eager fans still had to wait to get to the concert venue.

Yarra Trams scheduled extra services but it appeared not to have helped crowding at tram stops in the Bourke St Mall.

More than 60 people packed the stop and jostled for space when the already packed trams arrived.

Mega fan Melanie McGrath said she’s been listening to Adele non-stop for the last month ahead of tonight’s concert.

“The tone of her voice and melodies are amazing; I love her personality, it’s so offbeat,” she said.

Molly, Amber and Annie, all 9, have travelled from Devonport in Tasmania with their Mums to see Adele who they dub as their “role model.”

Their experience won’t come cheap, with tickets costing $380 each along with accommodation and airfares.

Adele will perform in Melbourne tonight before heading to Auckland next week.
