16yo killed next to brother in horror crash
A 16-year-old boy has tragically died by his older brother’s side after their ute collided with a truck en route to an Aussie Rules game.
A trip to the footy turned to tragedy today after a teenage boy was killed next to his older brother after their ute collided with another vehicle.
The unnamed 16-year-old boy, from Wonthaggi in Victoria, died at around 7.40am this morning on the Bass Highway, near Phillip Island.
According to Victoria Police, the driver of the ute — believed to be the boy’s 18-year-old brother — lost control of the vehicle and veered across the road before hitting a truck.
The driver was flown to hospital with serious injuries, and the truck driver was also hospitalised with minor injuries.
Dalyston Football & Netball Club president Andy Thomas told ABC News they boys had planned to play football at Koo Wee Rup before the tragedy occurred.
“They’re a wonderful family and just lovely people, great club people,” Mr Thomas told reporters.
“Our hearts are bleeding at the moment. It’s an absolute tragedy.
“All the Dayleston supporters will rally around the family and we’ll do whatever it takes to look after everybody and their welfare.”
All games planned for Koo Wee Rup on Saturday were cancelled following the accident, with tomorrow’s junior matches also suspended.
Police are continuing to investigate the crash.
It was just one several crashes on Victorian roads today, which resulted in three deaths.
Earlier today, a 58-year-old motorcyclist from Wodonga also died at Walwa near the New South Wales border after failing to negotiate a bend.
Authorities said the man died at the scene and that speed may have been a factor.
Meanwhile, a 19-year-old motorcyclist from Shepparton was also killed after he and another rider collided near the Midland Highway at Shepparton East shortly about 12.30am.
The second rider, a male teenager, was flown to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
The state’s road toll stands at 111, compared to 67 at this time last year.
