This website will tell you what your MP voted for

One website is forcing MPs to put their money where their mouths are by sharing how they vote on the issues.

It’s widely accepted assumption that politicians don’t put their money where their mouth is. After the election is done, their promises are no closer to coming true than when your year six prefect promised to fill the sprinklers with soft drink.

But now one website is holding your local Members of Parliament accountable and taking an ‘actions speak louder than words’ approach, by showing how they voted on the issues.

They Vote For You allows you to type in your postcode or the name of a local member, then spits out everything they’ve voted for and against in a range of categories from ‘voted consistently for’ and ‘voted consistently against’.

“We’ve peeled back the layers of stuffy jargon, arcane procedures and language so you can find out whether a member voted on expanding powers to intercept communications or for Aboriginal land rights,” says the website. “There is a whole list of policies. If you see one missing, you can add your own”.

For example, I won’t tell you my postcode but I can tell you that the votes of my local member tell me that he loves renewable energy, ending abuse against people with a disability and decreasing the gender pay gap and trans rights.

He’s also a little undecided on prioritising religious freedom and doesn’t think we should increase the cost of humanities degrees.

Each of the issues is then broken down to explain what voting for or against it means, as well as what specific bills were voted on for that issue.

It also breaks down how it decides the scores for MPs and the issues they voted for or against. It’s all very scientific.

I can honestly say that I can’t remember who I voted for, but in general I’m pretty happy this guy got in. Others in the office have not been so pleasantly surprised. Either way, it’s a pretty easy way to gather more information about the people you’re voting for.
