MIRRORING the vivacious personality of his clients led architect Sam Haberle to design a home best described as a “bold statement in design”.

The Norwood property, just outside of Launceston, was dubbed the Carrera House — a lovely combination of beautiful and creative, daring design.

Sam said on a site like this it was important to open the home to the views and to take in the natural north facing aspect.

He said the site was steep and the plan was tricky to formalise, but from that tricky brief the S. Group team was able to achieve a good balance between design and functionality.

“Our clients’ main brief for this house was for the home to be a hub for entertaining,” Sam said.

“It needed to be spacious, bold and for each space to capture the amazing views of the nearby mountains and vineyards. The personality of the homeowners, Tony and Kate Bush, was a big point in the design.

“They are big entertainers and love a party, hence the need for the large open-planned lounge, kitchen and dining areas opening onto the main talking point, which is the pool and alfresco area.”

A glorious swimming pool is a must for a house like this one. But it is not the only feature that will immediately grab a visitor’s eye.

Alongside the pool, people are bound to be drawn to a punchy, external form that is nothing if not a conversation starter.

Sam said the bright orange triangle found at the back of the home had evolved during the build process.

“The idea behind the striking colour was to get that corner of the home to pop,” he said. “When you look at houses, often there is a lot of love given to the view that is seen from the street.

“However, a feature like this orange one tells a unique story.

“It can be seen as you approach the entry; it really makes the back corner of the house a feature.”

Sam said the Carrera House owners were “super excited” to have the opportunity to create a home that was designed specifically for their needs.

“It was personal,” he said.

“And to top off the great clients the site was epic, too.

“The view to the mountains is something that you do not grow tired of and to throw a pool into a Tassie home design, that was a total bonus!”
