OFFSHORE salmon farming comes to the city with an open day at Princes Wharf No. 1 tomorrow.

Huon Aquaculture’s general manager of marine operations, David Morehead, said the event included tours of 75m well-boat Ronja Huon and virtual reality tours of offshore farms.

The company produces about 20,000 tonnes of fresh salmon a year.

“We are using some of the most advanced farming technology in aquaculture globally, it’s great to showcase that in Hobart and share how we farm,” Dr Morehead said.

He said it was a prime opportunity for the community to ask questions about fish farming. It comes as Tasmanian Salmonid Growers Association released EMRS market research surveying 600 people on their views of the finfish aquaculture industry.

TSGA chief executive Adam Main said the survey showed 85 per cent of the respondents had either a positive or neutral attitude towards the industry; 92 per cent considered farmed salmon had significant economic benefits and 35 per cent were concerned the industry created too much waste and pollution.
