Royal Hobart Show ride safety inspector ban revealed
THE Royal Hobart Show this year banned a safety inspection company from certifying rides at last week’s carnival due to safety concerns.
THE Royal Hobart Show this year banned a safety inspection company from certifying rides at last week’s carnival due to safety concerns.
The company Safe is Safe is being prosecuted in South Australia over the death of a child who was thrown from a ride at the Royal Adelaide Show in 2014.
The charges relate to allegations the company failed to ensure the health and safety of ride goers by exposing them to a risk of death or serious injury. Safe is Safe is reportedly going to contest the charges.
News of the ban follows the tragedy at Dreamworld on Tuesday when four adults were killed on an amusement ride. Safe is Safe was not involved in certifying the Dreamworld ride which malfunctioned.
Royal Hobart Show chief executive Scott Gadd said he informed ride operators that it would not accept inspection certificates from Safe is Safe.
It followed bans against the company by the Royal Adelaide Show and the Royal Queensland Show known as Ekka.
The ban against Safe is Safe was tested in the Federal Court earlier in the year after the company appealed Ekka’s decision.
The court rejected the company’s application for an injunction to stop Ekka’s ban on it from certifying rides.
Mr Gadd said there were a series of safety checks that ride operators needed to satisfy before being allowed in the show.
This includes annual certification by an independent engineer.
The Hobart show also contracts its own safety expert who inspects the engineer’s certification, insurance and ensures that a competent person is in charge of the ride.
The rides must then be test run each day without passengers.
Worksafe Tasmania also targets rides at the Hobart, Launceston and Burnie carnivals which are the state’s biggest shows.
A Worksafe spokesman said no ride operators had been barred from Tasmania’s various shows in the past year.
