A PERSON visiting a caravan where a fatal fire occurred alerted police to the tragedy.

According to Tasmania Police the visitor came across the caravan fire about 4pm on Saturday at Tunnack and called emergency services.

A body was found inside the caravan, however, police are yet to establish the person’s identity or gender.

The caravan was located on a block of land on Tunnack Rd, south of Oatlands.

Tasmania Police’s Constable Elise Clark said the victim’s identity was yet to be confirmed, with forensic identification expected to take several days.

Police said there was no evidence “at this early stage of the investigation” to suggest the fire or the death were suspicious.

Constable Clark said it was a timely reminder for caravan owners to make sure their appliances were in good working order.

Detectives, forensics staff and fire scene examiners were working to determine the cause of the fire and the death on Saturday night.

The coroner’s office and pathologist were also involved.
