POLICE have released the name of a young woman killed in a two-car crash near Waratah.

Madison Ann Brown, 20, of Penguin, died on impact after her Nissan Pulsar and a white Landcruiser 4WD collided just after 4pm yesterday near the Fossey River.

Police say initial investigations indicated she may have crossed to the wrong side of the road before the fatal crash.

It is believed Ms Brown was travelling home from Cradle Mountain when the accident happened.

The 19-year-old man driving the 4WD received leg injuries and is expected to be released from the North West Regional Hospital in Burnie today.

Speaking at a press conference earlier today, Acting Inspector Steve Jones said police officers had been conducting “road strategy” operations in the area at the time and were on the scene within minutes.

He said Ms Brown’s next of kin had been notified, with DNA testing conducted to formally identify her because she had suffered “significant injuries”.

“The man in the other car is very lucky to have only received leg injuries,” he said.

There were no indications, speed, alcohol or drugs had been a factor in the fatal crash.

Any witnesses to the crash are urged to contact Western District Crash Investigation Services on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.
