A MAN and a woman are in police custody after the stabbing death of a 41-year-old man at his home in the Launceston suburb of Newnham.

Police were called to an address in Parua Road at around 10.15pm last night and administered first aid to the man, who had suffered several stab wounds to the torso.

He died on the way to hospital.

A 32-year-old man and 39-year-old woman were arrested at a residence in Ravenswood this morning and were helping police with their inquiries.

“We are following a specific line of inquiry,” Detective Inspector Darren Hopkins said.

“The two in custody are part of that inquiry but we’ve still got a lot of work to do yet.”

It is believed the two men were known to each other and may have previously resided together.

A neighbour called police when alerted by the stabbed man to his injuries.

“We are aware that a disturbance had occurred and been heard about that time from neighbours,” Det Insp Hopkins said.

Forensics teams were working at the scene, a flat behind a Parua Road house, and at another residence in Ravenswood.

Police are appealing for information from members of the public who may have had contact with the two in custody last night or this morning.

“We believe these two may have travelled to a number of locations around the Launceston area and spoke to several people,” Det Insp Hopkins said.

“We’re interested to hear from any of those people.”

Police can be contacted on 131 444 or via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
