RETIRED beef producer Viv Bennett worked on the first Huon Show 70 years ago and is still as keen to ensure the biggest one-day agricultural event in Tasmania runs smoothly on Saturday.
Mr Bennett, a spritely 86-year-old and for about 60 years Huon Agricultural Society committee member, has been busy all week working at the Ranelagh Showgrounds for the show that is expected to attract more than 15,000 people.
“I first worked on the show as a 15-year-old and this year it’s again coming along really well. We are doing the finishing touches, we just need sunny weather,” he said.
Show president Mark Jessop said the event was dynamic and changed with the times.
“This show is about keep up with changing trends, but remaining focused on its agricultural identity. The grounds are looking very smart,” Mr Jessop said.
“It is a credit to the many volunteers who have helped over our 70-year journey.”
With more than 125 stalls of produce the show includes machinery, cattle, sheep, alpacas, woodcutting and family entertainment.
One of the features is the return of Brian Fish and his team of bullocks.
The entertainment marquee will host Make Believe performers, Tassie Magic Show, Pelican Puppets, roving artists, stilt walkers and a balloon twister.
Show Ambassador quests are open to various ages and among one of the show’s shining lights is the Home Industries, Floral Art and School displays pavilion.
“Huon is said to have the best rich fruitcakes, chutneys and jams in the state,” Mr Jessop said.
The show goes from 8am to 4.30pm. Admission: $10 for adults, $5 children, $25 family.
