THE Mercury and demographer Bernard Salt are gearing up for the Future Tasmania lunch event on Friday March 31.

The event will be a culmination of a two-week newspaper and online campaign exploring the future of the state as it heads to 2040 and 2050.

The dates are key because they are two milestones in the renewable energy race.

2040 is when the state government is hoping Tasmania will be producing 200 per cent renewable energy and 2050 because it is the nation’s target to reach net zero.

Mercury editor Craig Warhurst said Mercury journalists would be working with Mr Salt, University of Tasmania academics and the business community to look at the future and what it means to the community.

“Currently Tasmania is in an enviable position,” Mr Warhurst said.

“The state is the only one in the country that is carbon neutral and one of only a handful of jurisdictions in the world that can stake that claim.”

“It is a great advantage for business and the state’s reputation as clean and green.”

“The problem is with the state expected to surge toward 700,000 people from the current 560,000, how do we keep that reputation while catering for a population boom?”

“Will we have enough power and what infrastructure, changes to lifestyle, housing and thinking are needed to reach those goals?”

Mr Warhurst said the Mercury would use Mr Salt’s and the university’s insights on demographics to see what could be done and to explore the opportunities for the state.

Mr Salt will present his findings at the lunch and will be part of a Q&A on the day.

He said he was particularly interested in the unexpected surge in the state’s population during the Covid-19 pandemic where about an extra 25,000 people turned up in the state.

“A five per cent lift in population is a game changer for the state,” Mr Salt said.

“It could be the catalyst for bigger things.”

Media personality Joe Hildebrand will also be hand as the MC for the event.

Key businesses and organisations making the most of renewable energy space will also present at the luncheon.

“It’s set to be an event not to be missed,” Mr Warhurst said.

Tickets for the event are $150, which includes a lunch and beverage package, or $135 each for tables of 10.
