SHE only took up the sport a year ago, but Kingston High School student Annika Scott has been chosen to spend some priceless one-on-one time with Australian tennis great Evonne Goolagong.
The 13-year-old will this weekend head to Adelaide to take part in a national camp after receiving an Evonne Goolagong tennis scholarship for indigenous tennis players.
“I’m very privileged to be going over to Adelaide to work with her,” Scott said.
“I’m hoping to learn a few new tricks while I’m over there, especially on my backhand. I would love to improve it.”
Scott was chosen to travel to Adelaide after impressing the 14-time Grand Slam winner and former world number one earlier this year when the 1971 Australian of the Year visited Tasmania.
This was despite Scott only taking up the sport recently.
“I started playing in Grade 6. It took quite a while to get a hang of it, but I’m starting to play pennants now,” she said.
“I just really enjoy playing the game and want to keep doing it.
“I don’t have any real goals in the sport. I just want to keep on having fun when I’m playing.”
