Mr Fong failed to return from a day walk of the Tarn Shelf circuit on Saturday, police said, and was last heard from when he texted his friend at 3am Sunday saying he was seeking shelter overnight after becoming delayed.

Police believe the avid photographer has a personal location beacon on him, however it hadn’t been activated.

Addressing media on Tuesday afternoon, Tasmania Police Inspector Luke Horne said it had been incredibly difficult conditions for walkers.

“As you can imagine, at the moment conditions are extremely challenging in the area, with snow to knee to wait height, there are near gale-force winds and visibility is incredibly low and it’s incredibly steep and rocky in the area,” Inspector Horne said.

Mr Fong had made it to the Lake Dobson carpark on Friday where he spent the night before waking up early Saturday morning to complete the walk solo, Inspector Horne confirmed.

He said it’s believed he didn’t have camping supplies with him or much, if any, food and water.

“The sooner we can find Daryl the better his chances of survival.”
